About Selat Atlas
Planning Work That Holds Up Under Scrutiny
A consulting firm for the stages when you need to think more carefully before moving forward.
Back to HomeOur Story
From Sibu, for Malaysian Business
Selat Atlas was set up in Sibu by a small group of people who had spent years working alongside businesses at points of decision — new ventures, stalled expansions, plans that didn't quite hold together on paper. What became clear was that many founders and managers had sound instincts but lacked a structured way to test their thinking before committing time or capital.
The firm was built around one idea: that good planning work has to be honest to be useful. We don't write plans to confirm what a client already wants to hear. We work through the detail together, flag what doesn't add up, and put together something that can be used — whether to pursue an opportunity, shelve it, or refine the approach.
We are based at Wisma Sanyan in Sibu, and most of our work is with businesses operating in Sarawak or other parts of Malaysia. We understand the local regulatory environment, the practical realities of East Malaysian markets, and the kinds of constraints that don't always appear in generic business planning frameworks.
What Guides Us
Our Working Principles
Scope-matched work
We don't stretch an engagement beyond what the situation calls for. A feasibility check is not a business plan; a market study is not a feasibility check.
Plain language throughout
Our written outputs are designed to be read by people who weren't in the room — lenders, partners, or team members who need to understand the plan without prior context.
Collaborative, not transactional
We work with clients across the sessions, not just deliver a document at the end. The thinking happens together, and the output reflects that.
Candour over comfort
If the numbers don't support an idea, we say so. A plan that doesn't reflect reality isn't worth the paper it's on — and it won't help anyone make a better decision.

How We Work
Our Working Standards
Each engagement follows consistent standards across process, documentation, and client communication.
Scoped Engagements
Every engagement begins with a written scope. You know what the sessions will cover, what the output will be, and what is outside the work before we start.
Client Confidentiality
Business information shared in sessions is kept strictly confidential. We do not share client details with third parties without written permission.
Evidence-Based Analysis
Findings are grounded in data we can source and verify — not assumptions pulled from general frameworks. We note where data is limited and reflect that in the output.
Written Outputs
Every engagement ends with a written document — not just a verbal debrief. Outputs are formatted to be shared with external readers and retained for future reference.
Agreed Timelines
Session schedules and delivery dates are agreed at the start. We communicate promptly if anything changes and work to minimise delays on our side.
Feedback Loop
Draft outputs are shared before final delivery. Clients have the opportunity to flag factual corrections or areas needing further clarification before the work is signed off.
Our Expertise
Business Planning Consulting in Sarawak
Selat Atlas operates from Sibu, where we work with a mix of early-stage founders, established small businesses, and managers in larger organisations who need structured thinking on a specific question. Our core work covers three areas: testing whether a business idea is worth pursuing, building a business plan that covers the key bases, and assessing whether a firm is ready to enter a new market or segment.
Business planning in a Malaysian context involves navigating factors that generic templates don't account for — regulatory requirements that vary between states, the realities of operating in East Malaysia versus the Peninsula, access to funding channels like SME Bank or TEKUN, and the practical differences between urban and rural market dynamics in Sarawak. We factor these into the work rather than treating them as footnotes.
Our feasibility sessions are designed for people who need a structured sounding board at an early stage — not a full plan, but enough to know whether the idea holds together and where the main risks sit. The business plan development engagement is suited to founders who are preparing to grow, bring in a partner, or approach a lender. The market entry study is a more involved engagement for established businesses considering a meaningful move into new territory.
We don't work across every industry, and we don't take on more clients than we can serve well. When a request falls outside our scope, we say so rather than stretch into areas where we can't add genuine value.
